I always put myself in the position of a potential buyer when I am designing an email campaign with these questions. Would I open it? Do I trust it? Do I know this person or brand? Why would I open it? What is it offering me? Why should I spend my time reading it? And the list goes on.
If you are anything like me, I scroll through my emails first thing. You have a few nanoseconds to impress me or you are going straight to my deleted items. If you've really hounded me with the same old content I might even complain about you to my ISP.
I want to think that a brand knows me. Knows what I like and don't like. Knows not to email me at the busiest time of my day. Knows why I might engage with them. Knows what rings my bell.
